Frankfurt is a perfect destination for a quick yet enriching trip that will give another dimension to anyone’s understanding of Germany as a country. Whether you’re on a business trip, layover, or just trying to see German efficiency, I have your back! This guide on things to do in Frankfurt in one day will help you explore the city’s highlights without missing a beat!

After 2,5 years living in Berlin, the decision to move to Frankfurt was not easy. I always knew that Frankfurt is one of the main cities in Germany, the country’s economic centerpoint, but I was not sure what to expect. However, soon after moving to the city, all my fears were gone! I was immediately hooked up by the city’s buzzing atmosphere, the charming contrast of skyscrapers and traditional buildings, and the relaxed vibe around the River Main. I realized that Frankfurt is not only a financial hub, but also a city of culture, history, and stunning architecture. Many of the best things to do in Frankfurt are also free and promise a lot of fun!

Things to do in Frankfurt in one day

Morning: Explore the Heart of Frankfurt

Start your day by stepping into a fairy tale at Römerberg, the historic heart of Frankfurt. This picturesque square is lined with charming half-timbered houses and the iconic Römer. It’s a quite cool fact that this medieval building has served as the city hall for over 600 years! Take some time to wander around, absorb the atmosphere of old-world Germany, and maybe snap a selfie (because, of Instagram, duh!).

Head over to Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom). It’s big, it’s Gothic, and you can even climb up to the top if you want. A climb of 324 stairs will remind you that you should visit your gym more often, however, the view from the top is totally worth it!

Continue your journey to the Altstadt, Frankfurt’s Old Town. Just imagine cobblestone streets, charming squares, and houses that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a Brothers Grimm story. It’s a perfect place to buy an authentic German wooden toy and grab a coffee in some of the many coffee shops that are scattered around!

Walk the Iron Bridge and Marvel at the Skyline

From the cathedral, take a short stroll to the Eiserner Steg (Iron Bridge), a pedestrian bridge that’s a hotspot for love locks and Instagram photos. Cross over it, wave at the party boats passing below, and maybe even leave a lock—because who doesn’t like a good love cliché?

Marveling at Frankfurt’s shiny skyline is surely one of the mandatory things to do in Frankfurt in one day. In my opinion, you can see the best from the Iron Bridge, so don’t forget to click some stunning shots here!

On the other side of the bridge is Museumsufer (Museum Embankment). With a row of museums to choose from, it’s like a cultural buffet. My top pick? The Städel Museum—is packed with seven centuries of art so exquisite.

Extra tip: Many museums offer free entry on the last Saturday of the month. Have a look at the list and choose some of it to your liking.

Lunch Time: Try some local food

All that museum hopping has probably made you hungry. Time to recharge with a traditional Frankfurt feast! A great place to savor some tasty food is Kleinmarkthalle, Frankfurt’s foodie paradise. This indoor market is packed with more delicious, from fresh produce and sausages to international delicacies. It’s the perfect spot to grab a quick yet yummy lunch!

Find a cozy spot and dig into Grüne Soße (Green Sauce), a local herb pesto-like mixture, usually served with potatoes and eggs. Another must-try is a glass of Apfelwein (apple wine). Pro tip: It’s not apple juice, so unless you want to spend your afternoon napping on a park bench, pace yourself!

Afternoon: Shop Till You Drop…

Next, it’s time to embrace your inner shopaholic at Zeil, Frankfurt’s busiest shopping street. From designer shops to more affordable ones, Zeil has it all. Even if you’re not buying, a long stroll in the city’s most vibrant street is one of the best things to do in Frankfurt in one day.

Check out MyZeil Shopping Center—the building is famous for its architectural design because it looks like a giant glass tornado! Its indoor spiral escalator is what gives an additional twist and if nothing else it will take you to the mall’s food court.

Things to do in Frankfurt in one day: Visit Palmengarten or (and) Goethe House

From here, head straight to a completely different scenery – the Palmengarten or Frankfurt Botanical Garden. With exotic plants, greenhouses, and tropical vibes, it’s like a piece of paradise in the city. If you have some time, take a quick peek into the Butterfly House—because who doesn’t love a few colorful butterflies?

Next, if you have time, visit the Goethe House, the former home of the famous German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Step inside and see how one of the world’s greatest literary figures lived.

Evening: a stroll along the Main River and Main Tower

Congrats – the long list of things to do in Frankfurt in one day is almost over! Now, unwind with a chill stroll along the Main River. Its scenic riverbanks are a perfect spot to collapse on a bench and gather all your Frankfurt impressions. If you’ve still got energy, hop on a boat cruise and see the city from a different perspective.

Before you call it a day, get yourself up to the Main Tower—the views are epic, and the city lights look even better with a drink in hand. Buy a ticket for its observation deck or grab a drink in the restaurant on the 53rd floor. It’s like a cherry on top of your Frankfurt tour!

How to reach Frankfurt City Center from the Frankfurt Airport?

Thanks to the variety of transportation, getting from Frankfurt Airport to the city center is a “no-brainer”! The fastest and easiest option is the S-Bahn train. Just hop on either the S8 or S9 line from the Regionalbahnhof (Regional Train Station) at Terminal 1. In about 15 minutes, you’ll be stepping off at the Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station), right in the heart of the city. Btw, Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is the most controversial part of the city, so don’t be surprised by what you see there. 😳

If you prefer a more direct route, taxis are available outside both terminals, and the ride to downtown Frankfurt takes around 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Alternatively, the Frankfurt Airport Shuttle Bus offers a comfortable way to reach the center and nearby hotels. For those who want to arrive in style (and maybe avoid any luggage wrestling), you can book a private transfer in advance. With so many options, you’ll be out exploring in no time!

NOTE: There are 2 Airports in Frankfurt – the main Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Frankfurt Hahn Airport. Have that in mind when booking your tickets.

Is Frankfurt safe for Tourists?

In general, yes! Of course, as in any major city, it’s always a good idea to be cautious. I would recommend not going alone at night. Also, be aware of your stuff while getting off/on the train because there are some “shady” people offering help with the luggage. Frankfurt has a bad reputation due to some sketchy areas such as Bahnhofsviertel (the central station area), so if you can, I would highly advise avoiding it. Pickpocketing can occasionally be an issue in crowded places like the Zeil shopping street, the Römerberg, and public transportation, so keep your belongings secure.

However, most parts of the city, including the Altstadt, Museumsufer, and areas along the Main River, are very safe and well-policed. Stick to well-lit, populated areas at night, and you’ll have a great time exploring this exciting city!

Things to do in Frankfurt in one day – Conclusion

So there you have it: a whirlwind day in Frankfurt that’s packed, fun, and totally doable! Hey, you didn’t even need German efficiency to do it (although, German efficiency is a myth…). You’ve seen the best sights, tasted local treats, and maybe even burnt off all those potato calories with a few cathedral stairs. Cheers!
